On the Dialectic of Eroticism and Intellectualism
Lee Byung-Wook

Abstract
D.H. Lawrence and T.S. Eliot were famous contemporary writers in 20th century English literature, but for this study the main point of interest is their contrary basic life philosophies, life courses and literary tendencies. D.H. Lawrence was a flagman of eroticism and the anti-intellect in modern literature; on the other hand, T.S. Eliot was a standard-bearer of intellectualism and rationalism. Their unique positions were based on reason and sensibility. D.H. Lawrence was born in England and buried in New Mexico in America, and T.S. Eliot was born in America and buried in St Michael¡¯s Church in England. After their deaths, Eliot was buried in a church with the embracement of God, but Lawrence was buried in a wasteland, in a state of nature. The period in which both were active is coincident to the take-off stage of Freudian psychoanalysis, which Lawrence was interested in but Eliot was indifferent to. Although they led contrary life courses, they have common ground in their basic conflicts. Both repeated the compulsion of unresolved Oedipal wishes, and they held fast to issue of sexual preoccupation or aversion all through life. They reveal the failure of dialectical resolution and integration of love and hate, but they were both successful in sublimating their own partial conflicts through their creative works. I believe that the dialectical harmony of sexuality and reason with the appropriate integration of love and hate is a key issue in mental health in modern times.
